Automated Neuron Reconstruction

AutoNeuron offers a very significant reduction in the time and effort required to reconstruct neurons in 2D and 3D. An innovative tracing algorithm (patented) quickly explores the entire image volume and identifies neuronal processes and somas. AutoNeuron models neuronal trees as branching structures, complete with branch nodes, roots and endings. Available as a plug-in module for Neurolucida, the reconstruction model created by AutoNeuron can be analyzed, viewed and edited within Neurolucida. Diameters of the axons and dendrites are recorded at each traced point. Somas are reconstructed as a 3D volume using a set of contours.

Increase Productivity

The product reduces labor by a factor of five to ten compared to what is known as manual tracing – following each neuron process through a stack and clicking along the process. The continual development of this product is being supported by the NIH – it is a critical component for increasing productivity in neuron tracing and reconstruction.

Rapid Reconstruction

The AutoNeuron tracing time for a typical confocal or brightfield stack is under one minute on a standard desktop PC. This saves hours of manual tracing time compared to the current computer assisted approach. In interactive mode, the feedback is instant – view tracing on the fly and make editing corrections immediately if necessary.

Volume Rendering Display

With the optional Solid Modeling Module, you can view the image stack with reconstruction model superimposed in 3D. Rotate the stack and model, zoom in on any area for closer inspection of tracing accuracy. Options are provided to filter the 3D image data and set the transparency level of the traced processes in the model.

Compatible Output

AutoNeuron produces output in the Neurolucida data file format. View and edit reconstructions in Neurolucida. Use Neurolucida Explorer for full morphometric analysis of complex branching structures. Quickly export results to standard document formats for publication.
